On Expanding Your Definitions

I spent an evening recently cozied up with my latest issue of Flow Magazine. Flow is my jam, my one true love, my big, bright, wise book of constant inspiration.

This is how inspirational Flow is. I was reading the table of contents and came across this quote:

“…they have both founded schools that teach peace education.”

Without even making it to the article, I was inspired. I can’t completely claim to know what peace education is, but I assume the two people in the article teach others what peace is, how peace works, how to find it, give it, BE it.

I think of peace as a feeling. To me, it is similar to contentedness, ease, calm and kindness. You can have peace, find peace, create peace, give peace, be peaceful.

The words peace and education together though, struck me. If you can teach peace, what else can you teach? What other healthy, happy, seemingly random but clearly important topics can you teach?

So here’s an art prompt for you.

What kind of education would you teach?

Imagine you have the power, money, capabilities and support to open your own version of a school. Maybe your ‘school’ is actually a Facebook group. Maybe it’s a group chat. Maybe your version of school is getting together with a friend once a month at a cafe. Maybe it’s gathering your younger cousins in the back yard on a sunny day and getting them to sit in a circle while you lecture them. It’s your own version of school. Whatever way you want to teach, pass on knowledge, upload information. However you share important things.

What kind of education would you teach?

Think outside of the box a bit here. You’ve got creativity in you, so let it take over for a few minutes. Expand your definitions.

What does your school look like? What education will you teach? What work, thought process or area of expertise can you promote?

I will think this over and write in my journal, but feel free to create in whatever way opens you up. Paint a picture, do a cross stitch, play a melody, draw some shadows.

“They have founded schools that teach peace education.”

What kind of education would you teach?

Creativity education? Encouragement education? Pushing on education? Moving forward education? Doing your thing education? Being gentle with yourself education? Changing your priorities education? Valuing yourself education? Breathing in fresh air education? Being intentional education?

Pour a cup of coffee. Have a think. Make some art.
